Natural Plant Dyes: Alfalfa

Alfalfa, it's prolific in our fields right now and I thought it would make a fun dye experiment.  The neighboring farmer is going to hay our field any day now, so I wanted to harvest a basket full before it's gone.

I'll use my basic dye recipe here, though I may try mordanting with iron, too.  Maybe alum, who knows?  Really, it all depends on what I can find among the moving boxes.

I'll show you results just as soon as it's finished.

  1. Our neighboring farmer has the field adjacent to our house planted in alfalfa this year (so thankful it isn't corn again!). I had no idea you could use it to dye, but I suppose anything is an option if it colors the water? Can't wait to see your results. The last photograph is beautiful.

  2. Oh, the corn... our neighbor sprayed his field yesterday. It would have been nice to have some notice so we could leave the area for a few hours. I guess they probably don't see anything wrong with it.

I'm not sure it if will dye either or if it will be colorfast, but I have a lot of it, so I'm going for it!
